On saturday 1 december auckland s beloved pink path te ara i whiti turns three and we re throwing a block party with bells on to celebrate. On the opening day alone almost 2800 people cycled the lightpath with hundreds more crossing it on foot and enjoying its sweeping views over the harbour and city. In early december of last year the nelson street cycleway or te ara i whiti the lightpath was opened to auckland s cyclists and pedestrians. Bridge as well as the old nelson street motorway off ramp will be called te ara i whiti which translates as the lightpath.

Te ara i whiti light path designed in collaboration with monk mackenzie architects te ara i whiti lightpath transforms a redundant piece of motorway infrastructure into a playful and sculptural piece of cycling infrastructure threaded through auckland s inner city motorway junction. Auckland s hot pink cycleway has struck gold at the world architecture festival in berlin. Figures from auckland transport show thousands of people have used te ara i whiti the lightpath during the first fortnight since the nelson street off ramp was transformed into a dazzling magenta cycleway. The nelson street cycleway is a cycleway and in some sections a shared pathway for walking and cycling in auckland new zealand the most well known section of the path is te ara i whiti translated as and commonly known as lightpath also known as the pink path which is located on the old nelson street motorway off ramp the cycleway then continues on to the nelson street arterial road.
